There are good rail connections too from the rest of Europe. The seaside resort has always been popular with Madrilenians. This is due to its pristine beach, rich history, nightlife and good quality restaurants. Gandia is also set within the orange growing region of Spain, producing each year delicious oranges.

Suggestions to make the most of your holiday in Gandia, near Valencia

    The old city of Gandia

Gandia is located between the sea and the mountains, with a rich history. It has been very popular with poets and writers, the most famous one being Joanot Martorell (1413 – 1468). Joanot Martorell was a Valencian knight who wrote the Tirant lo Blanch novel. The novel was made into a movie in 2006. The novel is about the adventures of a knight during the Byzantine Empire and Cervantes, the creator of Don Quixote, praised it as the best chivalry novel. Passeig de Les Germanies is a beautiful promenade with trees, benches and fountains, very popular with the elderly locals. The Ducal Palace dates back from the 14th century and was the residence of the Royal Dukes of Gandia and the Borja Family. It was the birthplace of San Francisco de Borja, a cardinal who plotted against Pope Julius II. The palace has a private chapel and is lavishly decorated. The Collegiate Basilica of Santa Maria of Gandia or “La Seu”, is one of the main tourist attraction. It was originally an Arab mosque, converted into a church in 1499. The sanctuary is gothic but the rest of the church is baroque. If you are looking to do a spot of shopping before returning to your accommodation, then head to Calle Major where all the shops are, alongside cafes and restaurants. When dining out, try the Fideua, which is a traditional paella dish made using noodles instead of rice. There is a popular Saturday market worth spending a couple of hours.

    Gandia beach

The beach is pristine and it is a blue flag beach with great facilities. There is a promenade, which is a great destination for a stroll on a balmy evening. There are many beach volley courts and with the beach being so wide, it never feels crowded. There is a watersport centre where you can hire the right equipment to go windsurfing and kite-surfing. The popular beaches of Denia, Javea and Calpe are nearby and can be accessed by boat.

    Days out in the countryside

Gandia is very close to the mountains, an ideal ground for hiking and horse-riding through the vineyards and orange groves. This will be a nice change of scenery or perfect for some energy burning activities before spending the day at the beach. If you happen to be in Gandia during the winter, then the ski stations of Javalambre and Valdelinares are only a couple of hours away.

What to see and where to stay in Menorca

What to do in MenorcaMinorca or Menorca is a boomerang shaped island, and the second largest of the Balearic Islands archipelago. It is better preserved than its more famous sisters Ibiza and Majorca. The island has been an UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1993 and 40% of Menorca is now protected. The island is ideal for a beach and nature holiday with its endless beaches, rocky coves and turquoise watered bays known as calas.  The two main towns are Mahon (Maó) and Ciutadella (Citadel). Mahon is the second biggest natural harbour in the Mediterranean. It is a very laidback town and its architecture is a testimony of the British occupation during the 18th century. Ciutadella on the other side of the island, is a small fortified city, with a Muslim heritage. • 7 exciting nature holidays in Spain

7 exciting nature holidays in Spain

green holidays spainWhen asked about Spain as a holiday destination, most people will think about the sun, sea, flamenco dancers and overcrowded beaches. While some beaches in the South of Spain do match the description, what most people don’t know is that Spain is also a country with many Nature Reserves, Natural Parks and with such a varied, wild scenery that two days hiking or cycling will never be the same.

So if you are planning to go green for your next holiday, then the suggestions below will help you plan your next nature holiday.

    Green holidays in Andalusia

Costa de la Luz in Andalucía stretches from Tarifa to the mouth of the Guadiana River, along the provinces of Cadiz and Hueva. The Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park was the first natural park in Andalucia in 1984. The limestone landscape with cliffs, caves and gorges is home to a Griffon Vulture colony. The area is also popular for its white villages or pueblos blancos. The white paint was used to reduce the effect of the heat on the walls.  One of the prettiest one is Zahara de la Sierra, with gorgeous views of El Gastor Mountain and the valley surrounding the village. The area is perfect for hiking through the farms and is great for a family holiday in the nature. Another natural park to consider is the Natural Park Breña y Marismas de Barbate. The scenery will be slightly different with a mix of forests, cliffs and wild beaches. There are several routes which you can take to visit the park and discover its five ecosystems. • Adventure holidays in Andalusia: 5 unforgettable experiences

Adventure holidays in Andalusia: 5 unforgettable experiences

    adventure tourism in Spain

If you are looking for an adventure holiday, then head to Andalusia. Contrary to most beliefs, the area is not only a sea, sun and farniente Kingdom. Andalusia’s climate, its rocky landscape and proximity to a sea with warm waters is ideal for a spot of adventure tourism. Below is a suggestion of five activities which will make your holiday unforgettable: we start with a hike on Caminito del Rey, then horse riding in the Doñana Natural Park, windsurfing and kitesurfing in one of the most popular destination for wind sports Tarifa, paddle surfing in beautiful Cabo de Gata, and finally canyoning in untouched Rio de Verde.

Caminito del Rey – once known as Europe’s most dangerous hike

Caminito de Rey is located in the village of Chorro, in the north west of Málaga. It was built between 1901 and 1905 to link two hydroelectric power stations Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls. The pathway was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1921. The whole hike is about 7.7 km, with two entrances Ardales and Álora. The Caminito del Rey used to be the place to go and hike if you were a daredevil and some have lost their lives there. This is partly why the site was closed for about 10 years to undergo extensive renovations. It has now reopen and is a lot more accessible to the public than it was before. It might have lost a little bit of its thrill factor but it is still an amazing hike. It includes a 100 m high cliffside wooden pathway, with stunning views over the river Gualdalhorce, and stony tracks with small benches where you can sit and take in the scenery. You will need to wear a helmet and it is not accessible to wheelchairs and young children. They have kept the original pathway and you will be able to see how precarious the hike was before the improvement.

Horse riding in the Doñana Natural Park – enjoy unspoilt landscape with the gentle and noble Andalusian horse

The Doñana Natural Park is a UNESCO world heritage site and is a birdwatcher paradise. The landscape is very diverse with lagoons, marshlands, dunes, scrub woodlands, and maquis. It is the home to the protected Iberian Lynx, the Imperial Eagle and a wintering site for about 500,000 water fowls. If you enjoy nature, and unspoilt territories, then this is the place to visit. And even better on the back of an Andalusian horse. As the park is a protected area, you will need to book your horse riding tour with a company but it will be worth is as they will guide you through the best areas in the park, and don’t forget to round up the excursion with an unforgettable ride on the beach.

Windsurf and kite surf in Tarifa – one of the best spot for wind sports in the world

Tarifa is a small fishing village with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and a relaxed atmosphere. It is also a windsurf and kitesurf mecca with 10 km of white sandy beaches. There is always wind in Tarifa and the area is great for beginners too.  One of the best beach to go kitesurfing and windsurfing is the Valdevaqueros beach, just outside Tarifa. It is known as one of the biggest sport centre in the area. There is a school where you can hire equipment or brush up on your skills if you need to.  A bonus is that you can admire the mountains of Morocco while practicing your favourite sport. There is a great nightlife and also plenty to do if you are travelling with non-windsurfers or kite surfers.

Paddle surfing in Cabo de Gata, Almeria – one of the most beautiful and unspoilt coastline on the Mediterranean Sea

Paddle surf or stand up paddle is a lot easier, more accessible than windsurfing and is great if you want to spend some time on the water. The area is ideal with its calm and crystalline waters, and it will be the opportunity to discover the coastline with another perspective. The Cabo de Gata–Nijar Natural Park has many beaches, with fine sand and secluded coves, some are surrounded by pine trees and they are a lot quieter than the beaches on the Costa del Sol. There are many paddle surfing schools in the area and they do offer guided tours so that you get to see more of the coastline.

Canyoning in Rio Verde – experience some of Europe’s most spectacular gorges and canyons

Rio Verde is located in Otivar, near the beach of Alumuñecar. The area is very popular with cyclists, hikers and climbers. River canyoning is a mix of hiking, jumping, swimming, climbing and abseiling. This allows you to explore part of the countryside that are inaccessible. The Rio de Verde is a protected area and you will only be able to go canyoning with an experienced guide and with the right equipment. The scenery is absolutely stunning, with unspoilt nature and clear blue waters. The waterfalls, slides and steep drops, some of them a bit scary, will make for an unforgettable adventure excursion.

  • Cabin holidays in Catalonia

    Cabin holidays in Catalonia

    cabin campingo holidays catalonia

Camping has been a popular activity in the UK since the Victorian Times. People would gather along the River Thames, sleep under a tent and enjoy various boating activities. The equipment back then wasn’t as practical as it now and was usually transported by boat. The first commercial campsite opened on the Isle of Man in 1894. The popularity of camping has spread to many countries now and is probably best enjoyed on warmer shores, such as Catalonia in Spain.

Camping is back in fashion and has changed a lot since. Cabin campsites  have  bungalows with all the mod-cons, which can be rented by visitors looking for more comfort. The cabins or mobile homes have TVs, cooking facilities such as small stoves and microwaves, heating, air-conditioning, toilets and a small showers. So, you won’t have to cross the campsite with a torch in the middle of the night to get to the closest toilet. Staying in a cabin also allows you to camp all year round. Most of them have nice terraces outside with a table and chairs, where you can have a barbecue in the evening or relax and read a book during the day.  They are also a lot more enjoyable on a rainy day.

Cabins have many advantages. First, they are more affordable than staying in a hotel or a self-catering accommodation. Your holiday budget will stretch more and allow more visits, activities or outings to the nearby restaurants to sample the local cuisine. Cabin camping is ideal if you are travelling with a large family or a group of friends. Cabin campsites offer great outdoor spaces and are perfect to let children run around. Family friendly campsites will often have swimming pools which are supervised by lifeguards. They have play and sports areas and offer kids orientated activities so that adults can relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. Big campsites will have restaurants, bars, cafes and mini-supermarkets on site so you don’t need to drive out if you don’t want to. They are very sociable places and you can often make friends with people, just by sitting around the communal barbecue. Children will have instant friends to play with. They also organize parties in the evening or outings which are another opportunity to socialize. And because you are walking from A to B, you will get to greet and speak to your fellow campers on a daily basis.

BungalowsClub has more than 50 cabin campsites in Catalonia.

You will find them in Tarragona, Girona, Lleida and Barcelona. The locations are ideal whether you are looking for a camping holiday by the sea, in the countryside or even in the mountains.
