How to spend an active family holiday in Oliva near Valencia, on the Costa Blanca

All the beaches are wheelchair friendly and will be perfect for a family holiday by the beach. The old town will be a great option on a windy day, and there is a beautiful golf course nearby, the Oliva Nova Golf course. Oliva is also famous for its Feste de Moros I Christians Festival, taking place 3rd week of July. The traditional food will also be a highlight of your holidays. Oliva is close to the airports of Valencia and Alicante.

Activities to entertain the whole family

Family beach days out

Oliva has 10km of blue-flag beaches with excellent facilities. The Terranova beach is one of the last unspoilt beach on the Costa Blanca. It is very peaceful and quiet. It has a beach bar and two restaurants, and a fresh water spring to cool down. If you are looking for a beach with more facilities and entertainment, then head to the Pau-Pi beach, it is central and has many restaurants serving food all day. There are beach-volley ball courts, animation for the children and ice-cream parlours. The Playa Radbells will be a great destination for a relaxed evening on the beach. It is popular for its Chiringuitos (beach bars) and music. The marina is the place to go for watersports.

The Old Town

The village is well preserved and will be a nice destination on a windy day or to get a break from the beach. The church of Sant Roc was built on the site of a former mosque. Some of the narrow streets in the old Moorish part of the town, El Raval Morisc, can only be accessed on foot. There are many routes to follow that are well sign-posted. The ruins of Castle San Anna are on a hill and you have to go through a wooden area, with beautiful views of the surroundings at the top. The shops sell crafts and souvenirs and restaurants will serve delicious Coques a la Clafó (oven baked maize tart), Pebreres Farcides (rice stewed peppers), or Figatells (grilled meatballs).

Hikes in the nature

The Park Marjal Pego-Oliva Fen is very scenic with its marshes and you will be surrounded by rice fields producing the Bomba rice. According to the locals, it is the best rice, cultivated using ancient methods respecting the environment. The marshes are home to many birds. There are walking and cycling paths accessible to the whole family.

Festivals

La Semana Santa during Easter week, with the highlight being when all the residents gather on top of the Santa Ana Castle hill.

Festes del Christ take place in May, and are dedicated to the Crist de Sant Roc. They have been taking place since the 17th century, with crosses made of flowers displayed all over the town.

La Fira takes place in June, it is mainly a carnival with fairs and animations.

Moros I Cristians takes place third week of July with animations all over town, including parades of Moors and Christians, commemorating the battles and fights between Moors and Christians.

La Verge Del Rebolle takes place 1st week of September. It is the most important festival of the year in Oliva. The highlight of the festival is a procession to the Santa Ana Castle hill, followed by a fiesta on the ground of the old castle.
