The city, named «the little Rome» for its heritage value, is the starting point of our journey through the province of Salamanca. The most important monuments are located in the historic center of town, we have a nice walk through Plaza Mayor, one of the great emblems of Salamanca for its beauty and harmony. In the main square we can try a typical hornazo. From there, we got to the Casa de las Conchas by the 300 shells which decorate the facade. Right in front of the palace we will find La Iglesia de la Clerecía. From its towers are contemplated superb views of the whole city.

Looking for the Frog and the Astronaut

The next stop is the Salamanca’s University where was guiding the writer Miguel de Unamuno. In the building’s facade is hidden a frog who, according to tradition, who get’s lucky find her. Nearby, is La Casa Lis y the Art Nouveau Museum, known for its colorful stained glass. On the way to La Antigua Catedral we can relax in one of the most romantic hideaways: El Jardín de Calisto y Melibea, a garden located on the slopes of an old wall. Beside La Antigua Catedral, famous for its front door, stands La Nueva Catedral de La Virgen de la Asunción, whose northern facade is hidden a modern astronaut who was sculpted in 1993, when part of the church was restored.

To continue to discover the charm of Salamanca, we recommend arriving at Ciudad Rodrigo, just 25 km from the border with Portugal. Declared a Historic-Artistic, this town is famous for the big medieval wall surrounding it and  the Enrique II’s castle, built by order of the king in 1372.
